Hendri Liebenberg - Principal trombone
Hendri Liebenberg completed his undergraduate music studies at the UFS in 2001, majoring in Trombone performance, Composition and Jazz Improvisation & Arranging. While working as lower brass teacher at the Free State Musicon, he obtained the Post Graduate Certificate in Education at the UFS, and did a year long course in orchestral conducting under the late Christopher Dowdeswell.
In 2005, he moved to London, UK, where he free-lanced for a year, before accepting a position as brass teacher with the Guernsey Schools’ Music Service, teaching brass and directing the Guernsey Youth Jazz Orchestra, Brass Ensemble and the Guernsey Youth Wind Band. In 2010 he took up a similar position with the West-Sussex County Music Service, before returning to South Africa in 2011 to take up a position as brass teacher at Grey College Primary School in Bloemfontein.
As trombonist, he has been a member of the SA National Youth Orchestra, PACOFS, FSSO, and has free-lanced with various orchestras in SA and abroad. As Jazz pianist, he led the popular Guernsey Jazz Collective, which toured to Germany in 2009.
Future plans include post graduate studies in Jazz performance, arranging and composition as well as increasing his conducting engagements.
